    Solos

Serenade (Medium solos for violin, viola, cello, and bass.)

A truly beautiful and captivating tune, Serenade made its debut as a wedding processional, as the bride and groom walked down the aisle. Perfect for festivals and other special occasions. Chords marked for study or for improvisation. Comes with piano accompaniment.

Good Morning, Rachel (Intermediate solos for violin, viola, cello, and bass.)

Good Morning, Rachel is a simple and light-hearted solo, designed for the listener to drift into pleasant and happy thoughts. This piece evokes carefree memories of early years.

Für Alise (Medium solos for violin, viola, cello, and bass.)

Für Alise is lyrical and melodic. I wrote this solo for a student who was always delightful and full of energy and enthusiasm. Each section has its own drama, allowing the player to convey a variety of emotions and feelings. Take it to the extremes, dynamically and expressively!

Fall Novelties (Medium solos for violin, viola, and cello.)

This collection of tunes of the Fall season includes Marvelous Harvest, Scarecrow Hop, Jack-O-Lantern, and the ever-popular Gobble Gobble. The tunes are fun to play and each one is written in a different style with a variety of rhythms and meters. All tunes in keys of G or D. Delightful artwork by Marion Melin on the first page of each tune.

    Duets

Frolic (Classical contemporary. Advanced. 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, 2 basses.)

Frolic is a high energy tune that's fun to play. It's perfect to show off technical expertise. Instead of key signatures, accidentals are marked in the tune. A good tune for studies in chromaticism. In sections of the tune, one part continues where the other part left off to stimulate the listening and complementing skills of the players. Wide variety of dynamics. Good for festivals, concerts, and competitions.

Do a Duet (Classical contemporary. Advanced. 2 violins, violin and viola, violin and cello, 2 cellos, 2 basses.)

Do a Duet is an upbeat exploration in timbres and harmonies between two closely related string instruments. Listen for the fourths, thirds, and tritones. The trick is to find the balance you want between the two instruments to best display new timbres in the contrasting parts as well as in the unison or octave parts. In this rather intense piece, the two instruments also play with counterpoint and with call and response.

Overcast (Classical contemporary. Medium. Contrabass and tenor sax.)

Composed on a day with little sunshine, Overcast makes its atmospheric statement then opens up for improvisation.

The many types of rhythms, meters, dynamics, phrasings, articulations, embellishments, expressions, repeats, and endings in the tunes give students a wide range of experience.

Students can also learn more about major scales as the tunes are written in 8 of the major scales with a key change in one of the 7 tunes. One tune is a 12-bar blues with chords marked to help students learn the progression.

Animal Anthology: Water Play (Easy Medium.)
    Animal Anthology: Land Lovers (Medium.)

Each book of duets offers an enchanting collection of 18 tunes, one for each of 18 animals that spend most or all their time on water or land. Facts about the animals add to the presentation and motivation to play the music. Great for children and adults alike!

Note from teacher Mari Haig in December 2007: "I'm enjoying your books a lot. They're unusual and that makes it really fun to play the music. My cello students suddenly got interested in practicing and it's helped everything!"

Books are available for violins, violas, and cellos. The music can be played by any combination of these instruments. The tunes help develop violin, viola, and cello techniques and skills. An excellent source of supplemental music for students and teachers. Books also include information about endangerment and provides resources to learn more about this important topic.

    Trios

Triumvirate (Classical contemporary. Medium. violin, viola, and cello.)

Triumvirate explores chromaticity and the wonderfully haunting blend of string sounds. The tempo is slow, giving players and listeners a chance to savor the rich textures of the instruments. Triumvirate is an atmospheric piece that can take you out of context.

Between Time (Classical contemporary. Medium Advanced. 2 violins and cello or violin, bass, and soprano sax.)

Between Time is a quirky tune with sections open for improvisation. Choreographer Kitty Luce created a wonderful dance for this piece using characters from Alice in Wonderland.

    Quartets

    Opening Night (Advanced.)
    play introduction (tuning up)
    play the tune

Opening Night begins with a faux tune-up section based on typical sequences before the players stretch out. The second part of the piece is a dramatic, slightly tongue-in-cheek, celebratory tune to announce the beginning of the show to come. About 2 1/2 minutes.

    Propaganda (Advanced.)

The first movement, Getting Away With Murder, sets the stage with a seductive, calming melody, serving as the backdrop to the sound effects of war.

In the second movement, Political Discourses: State of the Union Meets Veterans of Foreign Wars, the cello prompts the viola. Players are free to interpret musical phrases and after spinning out of control, the movement continues with bits of national songs.

The last movement, Marching On and Stepping Out, begins with drumming and fiddling to continue the era and march that ends the second movement. The music moves from one style to another as individuals sometimes come together to join forces and sometimes go their own way. The piece ends with hope that it may be possible to end the insanity of war and its destruction.

All representations of characters in this work are fictitious and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. No similarity to any person either living or dead is intended or should be inferred. About 8 minutes.
